The story on Cotton states he took two bee hives to NZ. This is incorrect. It was his friend James Busby who brought hives for him from Sydney, New South Wales. Cotton tried twice to bring bees to NZ. The first lot, unaccompanied by him from London to Plymouth, were jettisoned in the Sound after having been violently tossed about on deck during the passage south. On Cotton's arrival there he procured more hives and these were shipped under a jolly boat aboard the Tomatin. The bees fared badly for some sailors plundered the honey and the hives died before reaching Sydney.
